AVID MUSIC, JODY WATLEY'S COMPANY imposed copyright rules on this video, even though it was a public forum and show to benefit LifeBeat and the video showed a few seconds of this show for the beneifit of Lifebeat. They evidentilly felt tthat people shouldn't see Jody performning at this show.  We thought the performance was good but some performers like exclusivity and maybe that is why some of them become unknowns to the newer generations and fade away.
RODNEY CROWELL at the Turning Point, Rockland County
The Turning Point Home of Great Music  468 Piermont Ave. Piermont NY 10968

Rodney Crowell, long time recording artist and songwritwer who performed extensively with Emmi Lou Harris and other greats as well as a long successful solo carreer performed right across the river in NYC backyard, Piermont NY at The Turning Point June 2011.
Rodney Crowell's been a favorite of mine ever since the 1970's, He migrated from Texas to Nashville to learn to be a songwriter and his heart and soul in his music was evident. His writing, singing and guitar playing earned him a spot with Emmylou Harris's Hot Band and launched his career.  Many a song sung by Emmylou was penned and colaborated with Rodney. In 1977, he formed his own group, The Cherry Bombs, and in 1978 released his first album, Ain't Living Long Like This. From there it's been what legends are made of.

Doobie Brothers at Jones Beach Amphitheatre, Long Island

The Doobie Brothers have been rocking and cranking out hits since the 1970s. Now close to 40 years later we find them still a strong viable source of musical inspiration.  With founding members Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, and 30 year-plus veterans John McFee and Michael Hossack, the Doobies have perfectly honored the band’s legacy with an offering that grows in unexpected new directions.   Aside from a few years of inactivity in the mid-eighties, the Doobie Brothers have continued to perform, create and record for over 21 consecutive years. “The Doobies have always been about playing live,” Johnston says. “We’re not a studio hot house group and we’re not a concept album band. We’ve always just brought in the tunes we had, put them together and made an album. That’s the way it’s been from the very first album and that’s still the way it’s being done.”

Current Doobies configuration:
   Guy Allison – Keyboards/Vocals              John Cowan – Bass/Vocals
Michael Hossack – Drums                       Tom Johnston – Vocals/Guitar
John McFee – Guitar/Strings/Vocals       Tony Pia – Drums
Marc Russo – Saxophones                      Pat Simmons – Vocals/Guitar
   Ed Toth – Drums

Lynyrd Skynyrd at Jones Beach Amphitheatre, Long Island

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the first rock band that I wore out records learning to play guitar. Yes I remember when the plane went down, and how my brother, who was tough as nails and lived Skynyrd music with his own outlaw band cried. The band has since lived on,  with various surviving members, family members and other talented musicians taking on the challenge to create what is Skynyrd Rock. Today they remain a mainstay and  standard to what is true rock and roll.

From their own site I humbly share portions of their own bio: One of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed Southern Rock groups of the 1970's. Their distinctive triple-lead guitar sound made their songs "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" American anthems and staples of FM radio. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria considered includes the influence and significance of the artist's contribution to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. The Twenty-First Annual Induction Ceremony was held in 2006 in New York, the ceremonies were aired a week later by VH1.  Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, Lynyrd Skynyrd is about an indomitable will. About survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American, stubbornly resolute.

Driven by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Lynyrd Skynyrd have recorded the album 'God & Guns'  (“under duress, as usual,” according to Van Zant and due to the recent losses of founding member/keyboardist Billy Powell and longtime bassist Ean Evans) that very much lives up to the legacy begun some 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson, yet they rock on.

Current Band: Gary Rossington- Guitar Johnny Van Zant- Vocals Rickey Medlocke- Guitar Mark "Sparky" Matejka- Guitar Michael Cartellone- Drums Robert Kearns - Bass Peter “Keys” Pisarczyk - Keyboards Honkettes: Dale Krantz Rossington- Backing Vocals Carol Chase- Backing Vocals

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Rock & Southern Rock
Show on Long Island NY
Diamond Eagle Rolling Rock & The Ranch, Portland Oregon 1982
Later known as Colin Whitaker Band Various West Coast clubs

Back in the Day I did play rock and roll and sing outlaw country with my brother’s band.  We grew up on music, engrained in us since we were very young by our mother and her ever present piano and singing.  I learned to play a cornet passed down from my brother then picked up guitar and sang, my brother picked up 5 string banjo and later the bass and shortly after that the guitar.  We started playing the local schools for their music fairs, then their dances then as we approached drinking age the bars and clubs that lined the Willamette river in Portland, Gladstone and Oregon City.  I went on to raise a family, my brother went on to record some songs, hone his craft and eventually become known as one of the Blues guitarists in the Northwest.

We learned Merle Haggard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Earle Scruggs, Grateful Dead and Jerry Jeff Walker tunes.  We attended every Scamp Walker show at the Salem Armory for years and usually got in for free one way or another.  Skynyrd was the first rock band that I wore out records learning to play guitar.  In 1977 I came home one night to hear the nightly news that their plane had gone done. I called Bruce to let him know what I had heard. Yes I remember when the plane went down, and how my brother, who was tough as nails and lived Skynyrd music cried.  After I put up the Lynyrd Skynyrd Profile above, a few nights ago I thought it would be fitting to include some early images from back in the day. My brother has re configured his band many times since those early sessions at The Ranch in Lake Grove OR.  The Ranch is long gone and so are some of the musicians in these photos but my brothers band lives on. Taking his middle name and recreating, always creating, they still play the bars and honky tonks now and then in the Portland scene.  This is my tribute to Bruce, guitarist extraordinaire! and the Colin Whitaker Band!
